A slushie or slushy is a type of drink made from flavoured ice similar to granitas but with more liquid. When a flavoured syrup is blended with ice it forms a slushy consistency. My grandkids go mad for this semi frozen drink. It is so cold, sweet and oh so refreshing after a day at the beach under a hot summer sun. Warning- this icy drink can cause brain freeze!
After enjoying snow cones and frozen rum cocktails in Hawaii I was keen to give these frozen drinks a run at home using Botanikos natural syrup flavours. My favourite flavour combos were lemon lime, pineapple orange and hibiscus orange, which as it turns out are also popular flavours across all generations!
Because slushies are sugar bombs, we have subdued the beast by mixing freshly squeezed juices with a shot of our all-natural botanical syrups. Where an 8-ounce (240ml) slushie will give you a 40 g hit of sugar (with half of this coming from high fructose corn syrup), our home-made slushies are 25% less sugar in keeping within the daily recommended free sugar intake. Botanikos slushies are also made from natural fruit sugars and possess additional Vitamin C and antioxidants for a healthier drink.
After a rigorous taste testing by a dedicated panel of slushie experts I have created recipes based on the following flavour combinations that passed muster: Watermelon Lime, Hibiscus Orange, Pineapple Orange, Passionfruit Orange. For the adults look no further than our frozen cocktail recipes Cosmopolitan, Margarita and Mojito or adapt our Rum cocktails like the Blue Hawaii, Hurricane or Pina colada.
