The Sidecar

The sidecar is the wintery sister cocktail to the Margarita. It has exactly the same types of ingredients at the same proportions except it swaps the tequila and lime for brandy and lemon. Three ingredients can be somewhat boring for most people and the ratio a bit tart, so we have added some simple syrup to hold everything in balance and create more harmony between the ingredients. We have cut down the amount of Cointreau and added in some simple syrup to soften the orange flavour. Feel free to tinker with the proportions 2:1:1 to suit your taste.

  • 60 ml Cognac
  • 20 ml Cointreau (using a simple syrup to restrain its somewhat overpowering taste)
  • 10 ml Bitter Orange or Marmalade simple syrup
  • 30 ml lemon juice
  • 1 Lemon twist
  • ice

  1. Prepare cocktail glass
  2. Rub lemon wedge around rim of coup glass
  3. Use superfine castor sugar to lightly crust glass rim
  4. Chill glass until needed
  5. Add ice to cocktail shaker
  6. Combine cocktail ingredients in a cocktail shaker
  7. Shake for 10 seconds or until well chilled
  8. Strain into a coup glass
  9. Garnish with lemon twist
